What I don't understand - why worry about games that aren't going to be out for years? And would you rather have a good game that has taken a long time to develop or something that's crap because they rushed it because of people complaining about how long it was taking?
|
Like releasing an add-on with reskinned armors and "new" content? OH WAIT, happened.
Also, you don't see a difference between not realising the game or a release date and releasing absolutely no info about the game whatsoever.

If nobody knows about GW2, nobody's going to wait for it. They barely got what, a few 10,000 people left actively playing this game? Even then, how much of those are still going to stay till GW2 come?
It's not a question of Anet not marketing, or GW2 not being a good game, it's a question of competition. In a world where Blizzard rules the MMO-scene, and you got your hands on a prosporous title (GW), you want to let people know a sequel is comming, BEFORE all the other games/expansion release that is.
How many people will still buy GW2 after they have already set their minds on: The next wow expansion, the next Blizzard MMO (D3), ...
Not many. Especially not with the current crisis going on, it souns cliche, but I don't think people will throw away money just for the sake of it. Hey, GW2 came out, let's spend ANOTHER 50$ on it, even tough we already bought 2 other MMO's...
Won't happen...
|
No, I understood your point, I just disagree.
1. You're assuming that marketing a game has to be a mutli-year process. I'm telling you it doesn't. Anet can do all the marketing/hyping it needs to in the 4-6 months leading up to release. Because....
2. If GW2 is quality, it will sell. If it's not, that's a whole different story. But if he game is solid, and gets good reviews, and gets good word of mouth, it will sell. Just like D3 will sell if it's good. Don't get me wrong, there are going to be plenty of franchise buyers for D3, and for BlizzardX, but after that initial wave, if the games don't live up, they'll sink.
If you and your friends sit around and buy games because of their amazing two-year marketing campaigns, more power to you. A lot of the rest of us buy games based on reviews and demos.
GW2 needs to be quality to compete, no question. But if it is, that quality will sell the game in the long run. There's a big difference between opening night sales and sustained sales.

Not suprising. Arenanet likes to fly under the radar at all times. I'm sure most fans will be super excited about GW2 but I'm not holding my breath for info anytime soon.

1 simple reason : GW sucks, why would GW2 be any better? NO ONE talks about Guild Wars, its all about the Warcraft and Warhammer. Plain and simple. I personally have come to despise Guild Wars.

With the past succes of the Diablo series we can assume what happens when Diablo3 gets released. Millions of people will play it. GW2 will have a hard time competing against it and I fear that ANet will lose if they don't have a very good product. Even with a good product they get a hard time...

The infringement lawsuit will bring to an end the GW era. GW2 is likely not to see the light of day.

*chuckles at all the obvious trolls*
@ Risus, GW is still in the top 10 list for most played online games right now according to XFire. While a lot of people may talk about WoW (because its the 500 pound gorilla) and WAR (because it is trying to be the new 500 pound gorilla), GW1 was never designed or intended to be as successful as it is. It is a niche market. An MMO for people who don't like MMO mechanics (level grind, gear based gameplay).
@ Abedeus, nice Simpson quote. But the point still stands that the MAIN reason nothing has been released about GW2 yet is because NCSoft doesn't want GW2 to be in direct competition with Aion. Any GW2 hype would detract attention from another of NCsoft's products. It's just good business sense.
@ Red Sonya. Even if that spurious World's.com lawsuit goes to trial and NCSoft loses, they will likely just be able to get awarded damages. They will not be able to shut down servers or prevent future product development. While a settlement would hurt NCSoft financial if they lose, they still have enough financial backing to continue to put out a game. Especially considering how long such a large lawsuit could take, not to mention any appeal. GW2 might be released before the litigation even ends.

Business sense? I don't think Aion matters. I don't recall City of Heroes being cancelled/moved because of GW and vice versa. Because those are two different games.

You can't honestly believe that. If NCSoft loses, GW2 will be pushed so far in the future, it's graphic system, ideas and engine will be so old nobody will buy it. Because MMOs make more money than "buy and forget" games.
Sure, GW is 7th most played game. Reason? No fee. You can even use it as a chat program. But it's beaten by Battlefield 2, CSS and even Warcraft 3.

I think you should look into the mirror and say that.
Seriously though, some of the posts on here are just stupid. Arena Net doesn't have hardly any income coming in, and NCSoft isn't a super wealthy company. They aren't going to have 100+ people working on a project collecting paychecks without getting something in return. That return will be GW2, and if it gets rushed because stupid trolls on the internet can't find anything better to do than bitch, it will go the way of Age of Conan, Hellgate London, or Tabula Rasa. And wasting money on hyping up a game before it is even closely ready to release is even stupider.
It won't matter what other games are coming out, because the other MMOs that have been mentioned require monthly fees and people have a hard time justifying paying one of those, let alone two. But since GW2 won't have one, they can get it and play for a few hours a month while downloading the newest bug fix or while weekly maintenance is going on, just like people are doing with GW1, and Arena Net would get the same amount of money as someone who plays 100 hours a month. And if you seriously think that GW2 and Diablo 3 will release anytime close to one another, especially with Blizzard's policy of delay, delay, delay, you need to get yourself some mental help.
